Chrissy Teigen was ’embarrassed’ by her mother’s Thai food as a child

If you follow her on social media, you would know Chrissy Teigen loves to cook and experiment with food. She continues to bless her followers with pictures and videos of various foods that she cooks and then devours with her family. It is believed to be a habit she picked up from her mother.

But as a child, Teigen was “embarrassed” by her mother’s cooking. The model and cookbook author shared that while she urged her mother, Vilailuck ‘Pepper’ Teigen, to write her own cookbook, she hasn’t always been a fan of her recipes.

In the foreword to ‘The Thai Pepper Cookbook‘, Teigen wrote that she wanted people to have “the full’ Thai mom ‘experience.” “Mum’s food looked different and smelled different – honestly I was a little embarrassed when I was young,” the 35-year-old wrote.

Pepper said Initiated that her book is essentially filled with the best recipes her daughter loves, adding that she remembers the times when her daughter was “ashamed of the smells and flavors that she now adores.”

“She was, you know, in fifth or sixth grade and very popular in her class,” Pepper reportedly said. She added that Teigen would bring friends over to their house and that she would have to “adapt her cooking” accordingly.

She remembers her young daughter asking for grilled cheese and pizza “like most kids”.

According to Initiated report, in the introduction to the book, Pepper wrote about a time when she “put herbs in one of my Thai salads and [Teigen] shouted at me: ‘MOM! Why do you eat weed? “

For Pepper, cooking has always been a way of “staying connected” to “family and Thai roots”. She was born in Thailand and raised in a small town outside of Korat Town – a popular food town, according to the author. In the introduction, Pepper wrote that she grew up around the kitchen and started helping her mother, a breakfast seller, when she was in her third grade, the report says.

Later, when she moved to the United States with Teigen’s father, Ron Teigen, she found herself driving for an hour, just to find familiar ingredients like the fish sauce she wanted to cook with.

And back then, while it wasn’t a popular meal choice for Ron’s first daughter Chrissy and Pepper, Tina, she used the food to remember her own mother’s culinary legacy.

Today, however, Teigen enjoys his mother’s cooking more. She included some of her recipes in her two ‘Cravings‘ books. Pepper, who now lives with her daughter, her husband, singer John Legend, and their two children, said they “all love to cook and eat together.” “Our house smells of hot pepper and all day long. People are more accepting of Thai food now. All of our friends, they eat whatever I offer them now.
